Miami-Dade Fire Rescue is Calling all Junior Lifeguards


Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s (MDFR) Ocean Rescue Bureau is looking for youths interested in learning about ocean lifeguards. Children ages 9-17 will get the opportunity to learn about aquatic safety, minor medical first aid, beach etiquette, preventive action and saving lives.

Junior Lifeguards can register on Saturday, June 9, 2012, at 10 a.m. for a month-long session at either Crandon Park or Haulover Park. All aspiring lifeguards must possess a basic swimming ability and successfully complete the following:
• Swim at least 100 yards with a steady stroke without stopping in under two minutes.
• Swim 30 feet under water without stopping.
• Tread water for three minutes.


The Junior Lifeguard Program was created 19 years ago to give the youth in our community an opportunity to learn the responsibilities of ocean lifeguarding. As a part of the program, ocean rescue lifeguards provide the young participants with a sound aquatic background and acquaint students with the hazards of ocean swimming.


“The Junior Lifeguard Program is a great way for MDFR’s Ocean Rescue Bureau to reach the children in our community with important aquatic and life safety information,” said Fire Chief William W. Bryson. “These future lifeguards will get an up-close look at an exciting and vital public safety profession while being exposed to an environment that will teach them courtesy, respect, discipline, sound morals and good sportsmanship.”
